Anfoega, Aug. 15, GNA – Mr Atta Kudjoh, District Chief Executive of North Dayi in the Volta Region, has said the sustainability of a vibrant agricultural economy depended on the young generation’s interest in farming.

He said a major worry for most farmers was the waning interest of students and the youth in Agriculture, and that the educational system must help by re-organising school curricula to include some farming activity.

The DCE made the recommendation when he engaged the people of the District during a town hall meeting at Afoega under the auspices of the Ministry of Information.

He said Government’s flagship programmes in agriculture hinged on youthful involvement in the sector hence the need to whip up the enthusiasm in the youth.

Mr Kudjoh said school farms would enhance the practical studies of students in agriculture, and asked school heads to consider establishing small farms and backyard gardens.

He said cashew had been identified as a potential cash crop, and that the Assembly had secured land for seedling production and distribution to farmers.

About 2,600 farmers from the District are benefiting from the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, and the Assembly had plans of developing an under- utilised fruit packaging facility in the District under the One District One Factory policy.

About 20 projects in the areas of education, health, water, sanitation and transportation are currently being pursued by the Assembly.
