Abuja, Dec. 16, 2018 (NAN) African Agricultural Technology Foundations (AATF) on Sunday said it was conducting research in Nigeria to develop new varieties of cow pea, rice and other food products to boost agriculture in the country.

The Foundation’s Regional Director, Dr Issouhou Abdurhamane, disclosed this when he led a team to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The visit was to sensitise Nigerians to the usefulness of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).

Abdurhamane explained that the research was biotechnologically based, which could be useful in agricultural development in the country.

AATF, a non-profit organisation based in Nairobi, Kenya, is designed to facilitate and promote public, private partnerships for access and delivery of appropriate agricultural technologies for use by resource-poor smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

« We are glad to be here, we came here to explain to you what we are doing in the area of agricultural research.

« And how we want to solve some of the interface problems our farmers are facing and what we have done so far, and what are the results and the outcomes.

« We did a lot of research and we did a lot of work in Nigeria, so we are working really with Nigeria Research Institutes

« They help and we have been able to develop a very important cow pea variety, it’s highly resistant to one of the devastating insect pests, we called it mauka and we are also mechanizing agricultural cassava production in the south (Nigeria).

« And we are also working very diligently, I should say intelligently and very hard to solve some of the rice problems, developing rice varieties with capacity and potential at least to cut down 50 per cent of rice import.

« We are doing our best to solve some of these problems.

The AATF official said the foundation was working in collaboration with other agencies like National Biotechnology Development Agency, Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria and National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control and (NAFDAC) in Nigeria. (NAN)
