Eight confirmed dead in Boankra accident

Kumasi, Jan. 11, GNA – Eight people have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident that occurred at Boankra on the Kumasi-Accra highway in the Ejisu municipality on Friday dawn.
Several others who sustained various degrees of injuries have been admitted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi and the Ejisu government hospital.
An eyewitness told the Ghana News Agency that the accident which occurred on Friday dawn involved a Sprinter Benz bus, which was travelling from Kumasi to Accra and an articulated truck.
He said the accident occurred when the Sprinter bus driver in an attempt to overtake another vehicle in front of him crashed into an on-coming articulated truck.
The source said three persons died on the spot, while the five others were reported dead when they were rushed to the Ejisu government hospital.
He said the articulated truck after the collision run over the road and crashed into a nearby house, causing damage to the house.
Chief Superintendent Frank Abrokwa, Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) told the Ghana News Agency that, the police had opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
He expressed concern about the unnecessary overtaking, especially by Sprinter and VIP bus drivers on the Ejisu-Konongo section of the Kumasi highway and advised them to stop the dangerous practice.
