Accra, June 19, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 35-year-old mason for allegedly using a mallet to inflict several wounds on his wife’s head and hand.

Prince Kofi Oppong Sarpong pleaded guilty to causing harm to Sarah Nkrumah, a hairdresser, and was convicted on his own plea but remanded into police custody to July 3, for sentencing.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the Court presided over by Ms Eva Bannerman Williams that Rashiratu Adams, a hairdresser is the complainant in the case and the victim’s neighbour at Kanda Estate, Accra.

He said Sarpong and Sarah were couples and had lived together for the past 15 years and has two children.

The Prosecution said on May 26, this year, the accused person spent the night with another woman in one of the rooms in their house, thus, an argument ensued between him and the wife at dawn the next day over the issue.

The Prosecution said on the same day ( 27th May) at about 2300hours, when Sarah was asleep, Sarpong took a mallet and inflicted several wounds on her head and left hand.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said the victim screamed for help and she was rescued by Rashiratu and others who rushed her to the Police Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.

He said a complaint was subsequently lodged with the Nima Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

He said the victim was then issued with a police medical report form to attend hospital.

He said Sarpong bolted after the act but was later arrested where he confessed to the crime in his cautioned statement.
