Play your part to ensure internet sustainability – Minister

Accra, July 12, GNA – Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei, Deputy Minister for Communications, on Friday called on Ghanaian internet users to ensure that they contribute towards the development and sustainability of the internet.

He said government was doing its part to ensure that the right atmosphere was created for the proper use of internet, stressing that in the area of internet security the Ministry had undertaken measures with the establishment of the national cyber security centre to facilitate security in the cyber echo system in Ghana.

Mr Odotei stated at the Ghana Internet Governance Forum 2019, organised by the Ministry of Communication with support from Media Foundation for West Africa and MTN.

The two-day forum was held on the theme; “Digital Communities: roles and responsibilities of stakeholders for sustainable development”.

The Deputy Minister said government was currently on and also securing a new cyber security deal and facilitate security in the digital space in the country to further promote the development of the internet space in Ghana.

Mr Odotei said the government had established the Ghana Building Research Institute registry to manage the Ghana domain page.

He said to enhance the design and development of world class Information Communications Technologies (ICTs), the government again had created the Directorate of Research and Innovation (DRI) at the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence (KACE).

He explained that the DRI is to create a network of faculties research centres, researchers and connect with industry to enable staff and students scale-up research, clear ideas into real world solutions and working technologies for the improvement and advancement of individuals institutions and the country as a whole.

Mr Odotei said the Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence has a research laboratory to support the development of the centre in Sunyani, E-Learning in Accra, in addition to that, the NCA had actively issued policies of ensuring high quality service standards in the telecommunications industry.

The NCA, he said had shown commitment in new and emerging issues such as cybercrime with the establishment of the network operation centre team to handle computer excellence in the working sector.

Mr Kwasi Adu-Gyan, Director General, AITI-KACE, said responsibilities of stakeholders of sustainable development should be taken seriously if Ghana intended to develop software and ICT solutions for the country, adding that there must be conscious effort to flow processes and procedures for the designed development and communication of our solutions.
