MONROVIA, July 20 (LINA) – The Monrovia City Court on Monday arrested four employees of the Ministry of Finance along with one person of the GN Banks for allegedly stealing L$5millons and US$83,800.00 from the Government of Liberia.
The writ of arrest was issued following a complaint from the Government by Stipendiary Magistrate Jomah Jallah which said defendants were brought under the jurisdiction of the Court.
The writ of arrest named those concerned as William Joe, E. Nathaniel Gibson, Emmanuel J. Bryant, Jeremiah Gbelley and Alhaji Lamine Sambolah.
The writ ordered that the accused be brought before the Monrovia City Court to answer to the charges of economic sabotage, forgery, criminal conspiracy, theft of property, and criminal facilitation based upon the oath and complaint of the Republic of Liberia by and through the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Ministry of Justice.
According to the writ, during the period of May, including June 2020, in the City of Monrovia, the alleged defendants with wicked and criminal intent, purposely connived and conspired using fraudulent means criminally stole from the Ministry of Finance several blank checks.
The said defendants placed on the said bank checks their own figures, which they took for encashment at local banks, where they took L$5 million and US$83,800.00 under criminal deception and converted it to their personal use and benefit with the intent to economically sabotage the government.
The alleged act of the defendants being unlawful wicked, criminal and international is in violation of sections 15.51, 10.2, 10.4, 15.80, and 15.70 of the New Penal Law of Liberia.
Meanwhile, the defendants have forwarded to the Monrovia Central Prison requiring a valid criminal appearance bond to secure their temporary release.
