Tension Mounts At Cuttington University, As Students Threaten Strike Action

GBARNGA, Oct. 4 (LINA) -The Cuttington University Students Union (CUSU) has given the University Administration a « four-day ultimatum » to make specific determination for the reopening of the university.

Addressing a press conference in Gbarnga recently, the students said despite the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) mandate to institutions of higher learning across the country to reopen by October 1, 2020, the CU Administration is yet to determine when to reopen the institution.

According to the CUSU, the Emmett Brown Administration recently issued a press release indefinitely suspending the reopening of the school because of the recent strike action by its staff in demand of their pay.

According to the student union, Cuttington University is the only higher learning institution that did not complete semester two of the 2019/2020 Academic Year, while other such institutions have formulated strategies to successfully end the school year amidst the outbreak of the COVID-19 in the country.

The students union threatened that if nothing is done by the school administration to reopen the institution soon, they will stage an indefinite strike action on the school campus.

Cuttington University is a privately-owned institution located in Suakoko District, Bong County that offers degrees in several disciplines including agriculture and education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with sub branches in Bong, Margibi and Montserrado Counties since the 1960s.

However, since 2010, the school has encountered financial challenges that have made it difficult for the administration to meet its obligations, including the payment of staff’ salaries.
