Susuanso, (A/R), Oct 30, GNA-Mrs Akosuah Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff on Thursday inaugurated water projects constructed to provide quality drinking water to residents in three deprived communities in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.
The projects, funded by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) under its Pro-Poor Water Programme would enable residents of Susuanso, Adrobaa and Koforidua to access potable drinking and regular water supply to improve on their living conditions.
According to the PURC, funding of its pro-poor water programme was in line with the PURC Act 2010 (Act 800) as amended, which provided the necessary legislative framework for funding the water projects.
Mrs Osei-Opare emphasised the nation’s readiness and commitment to the realisation of goal six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, saying as a basic necessity, government would ensure deprived communities accessed quality and potable water.
Addressing the chiefs and people of Susuanso at a symbolic ceremony, the Chief of Staff praised the PURC for efforts to ensuring deprived communities accessed regular water supply and was hopeful with the projects, residents would also enjoy the nationwide free flow of water towards stemming the spread of the COVID-19.
She praised Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North for the level of development she gave to the communities and expressed the optimism that residents would take good care of the projects in their own interest.
The Chief of Staff later inaugurated a Kindergarten block and a durbar grounds the MP constructed in the Susuanso and Susuanho communities respectively.
Mrs Prempeh on her part said development sent to the Tano North Municipality within the three and half years of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government remained unprecedented.
Currently, she said several road networks in the area were being re-shaped, while construction works on many others including; the Techire-Adrobaa road had already been completed.
She said almost all communities in the area had in one way or the other benefited from the provision of a school block and a borehole, saying she had funded the construction of 75 boreholes, while electricity was extended to more than 32 deprived communities in the Municipality.
Mrs Mami Dufie Ofori, the Executive Secretary of the PURC explained Mrs Prempeh approached the Commission and requested for the provision of the water projects-mechanised boreholes with storage facilities.
The PURC through similar requests initiated and implemented 40 of such mechanised boreholes with storage facilities and standpipes, and boreholes fitted with hand-pumps nationwide in 2019/2020 project year.
Mrs Ofori said the Commission invested more than GHC3 million during the project year, and expressed the hope that beneficiary communities would be able to enjoy improved standard of living, as water played a crucial role in daily lives.
