BARCLAYVILLE, Feb. 4 (LINA) -Former Senator Dr. Peter Coleman has conceded defeat in the Grand Kru County Senatorial race and sent a congratulatory message to the winner, Numene Bartekwa.
Dr. Coleman, a member of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) conceded defeat after the National Elections Commission (NEC) declared independent candidate Bartekwa as winner of the Wednesday, January 13, 2021 rerun election in Grand Kru County..
The former Senator extolled citizens for their support during the Mod Term Senatorial election.
Dr. Coleman, a medical practitioner, said he will remain engaged with citizens through his humanitarian services and programs in the county.
Dr. Coleman. who served as Health Minister during the Charles Taylor regime, disclosed that despite his defeat the commitments he made to the citizens during the election era, including completing projects initiated by him, will be fulfilled.
He expressed appreciation to citizens of the county for affording him the opportunity to serve his county and country for the past nine years.
Dr. Coleman said the election results show that people of the county have spoken and their decision should be respected by all those that contested the election in Grand Kru, adding, “it speaks volumes that citizens were yearning for positive change.”
He also urged other candidates who contested the election to follow his footsteps and concede defeat in the interest of the county’s development.
He stressed that the declaration of independent candidate Bartekwa as winner should be respected by all candidates who contested the senatorial election.
The rerun conducted put Bartekwa ahead of Representative Nathanial Behway with 82 votes.
Meanwhile, Dr. Coleman is cautioning the winner to work very hard in reconciling the people of the county.
He spoke on Ahteenah Radio on Wednesday via telephone interview.
At the same time, the former Senator has vowed to promote technical education in Grand Kru County in order to overcome poverty, unemployment, and financial constraints amongst Liberian youths.
He disclosed that while in the private sector as a senior citizen of the county, he will continuously engage the central government and Legislative Caucus to ensure that the needed support is given the county’s community college.
‘’Now that the Technical college is here in Grand Kru County, it is about time that our young people take advantage of the opportunity provided them by the government of Liberia to prepare themselves for the job market,” Dr. Coleman urged.
