Ho, Feb. 08, GNA- The Ghana ICT Skills Hub (GISH) Foundation, an NGO into enhancing computer literacy with support from the Grange Academy in the United Kingdom (UK) has presented some teaching and learning materials to Rhema International Academy at Sogakope in the Volta Region.
The materials which included story books, pencils, lunch bags, educational CDs and cartoons would help the students improve on their reading skills and broaden their knowledge.
Mr Evans Gyakye, Content and Programmes Manager of the Foundation, disclosed to Ghana News Agency their gesture formed part of the Foundation’s « Ubuntu project » aimed to promote quality education.
He said through the project, deprived schools in the country would be provided with books and other educational materials to build their capacity to deliver effective academic work.
Grange Academy in the UK has adopted Rhema International Academy, he disclosed, and that had made it possible for them to exchange educational materials among themselves to offer quality education to the children.
Mr Gyakye called on the School’s authority to ensure proper maintenance of the items and put them to good use to achieve its intended purpose.
He charged the students to devote much of their time to reading to acquire the requisite knowledge that would prepare them to become responsible future leaders of the country.
Madam Bernice A. Maxwells, Headteacher of the School, commended GISH for the support and promised to ensure proper maintenance and good use of the materials.
She said it had been their dream to get enough reading materials to stock their mini-library to motivate the children to read, describing the support as timely.
Madam Maxwells appealed to philanthropists, institutions and benevolent organisations to support the school in similar ways.
The Foundation also made a similar donation to the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) in Ho.
Mr Gershon Koffi Dzokoto, Volta Regional Director of the Society, said the gesture would help reactivate the Youth in Library Services of the Society.
He disclosed that the GRCS had Youth in Library Services Department, which aimed to inculcate reading habits in the youth, however it had been dysfunctional for some time now, due to lack of reading materials.
Mr Dzokoto commended GISH for the gesture and assured that the items would be used properly to benefit the youth.
