PoP builds 187 classrooms in three regions

Ho, Feb. 19 GNA – Pencils of Promise (PoP), an International education and literacy organisation has built 187 classroom blocks in 24 districts in three regions of the country since it started its operations in 2012.
It has also renovated 11 classroom blocks, built 17 KVIPs and 27 urinals.
The regions are Volta, Oti and Eastern.
Mr. Freeman Gobah, Country Director of PoP, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement session in Ho on Thursday.
The engagement session was to introduce stakeholders to their roles and responsibilities to ensure effective collaboration in the implementation and ownership of the programme.
Participants included District Directors of Education, Headteachers and PTA Chairmen of beneficiary districts and schools in the southern part of the Volta Region.
Mr. Gobah said the engagement session was also aimed at improving learning outcomes in basic schools, especially proficiency level in literacy from kindergarten to primary six.
He said they would also build the capacity of teachers, provide teaching and learning materials, evaluate and track the performance of the pupils.
The Country Director noted that they would follow up coaching sessions and organise radio learning programmes for the beneficiary schools.
He said PoP would promote hygiene education in the schools through the provision of hygiene and sanitation materials and also encourage formation of hygiene clubs in the schools.
Mr. Gobah said teachers in the beneficiary schools would be better equipped while the learners would have easy access to more books to read.
He mentioned apathy of some beneficiary communities towards providing communal labour and partisan politics as a hindrance to their smooth operations.
Mr. Gobah appealed to the beneficiary communities to develop the culture of maintenance.
Ms Evelyn Araba Zentey, North Tongu District Director of Education, on behalf of the beneficiaries pledged their commitment and dedication to the programme.
She called on headteachers and PTAs to be more proactive and live up to expectation.
