Ayitikope (V/R), Jan. 01, GNA- Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi South Constituency has handed over bags of maize to flood victims in some communities in the Akatsi South District of the Volta region.
A total of 100 bags of maize were given to over 50 farmers who lost their crops to flood in July this year, at a short ceremony held  at Ayitikope, near Akatsi.
The gesture was necessitated by the gushing of floodwaters, which submerged acreages of farms destroying crops worth hundreds of cedis in three communities in the constituency.
The affected communities are Kpohega, Atidzive and Ayitikope.
The MP described the situation as « highly disturbing-taking away their livelihood, » and said more needed to be done to find permanent solutions to challenges facing farming activities in the area.
Mr. Ahiafor encouraged farmers in the area to join Farmer Based Organisations to benefit more from their farming activities.
He asked the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to be proactive and help alleviate challenges of farmers in the area.
Mr Jerry Etse Agbo, Assembly member for the area, who received the items on behalf of the victims, expressed gratitude to the MP and his team for the kind gesture.
Mr Famous Kordzo, a 62 year old farmer and a victim, thanked the Member of Parliament for the timely intervention.
Earlier, when the GNA visited the farms, maize, garden eggs, pepper, tomato and beans farms were deluged.
