Accra, Nov 18, GNA – Elizabeth Addo, captain of the Black Queens of Ghana, has said, their first win in the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) against Algeria was « very important » for their campaign in the competition.

Ghana beat Algeria by a lone goal in the opening game of the competition, having missed several goal scoring chances in the game.

Following criticisms from the fans, who were unhappy with the team’s poor conversion rate on the day, Addo in an interview after the match admitted, they could have done better with their performance.

She said, regardless of their inefficiencies in front of goal, the victory was important for their quest to « hosting and wining ».

« It was a very important win for us. We have three points in our bag and now we have to look at the next game. We are very focused and would prepare well to meet Mali. Algeria is past so we want to look into the future for our next game, » Addo said.

She praised the fans for their support, adding that the actions and inactions motivated the team.

« The crowd really boosted us. When they cheered us up, our motivation also increased. They did really well and we thank them for the support. They should come and support us again in our next game. »

Ghana would play Mali on Tuesday at 15:30 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium. Mali sit at the bottom of Group A after a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in their first game, whilst Ghana are second behind group leader Cameroon on goal difference.
