Assault on New Times journalists: NMC demands action

  16 Mars      36        Société (45111),

Accra, March 16, GNA – The National Media Commission (NMC) has demanded immediate action from the Police Administration against the officers who assaulted journalists of the New Times Corporation.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, Chairman of the NMC, said the offending officers should be arrested without waiting for the victims to identify them.
There should be no difficulty in identifying the assailants since the journalists were brought to the police station and detained.
The statement asked that the conduct of the station officer also needed to be investigated – to find out the reason for the detention of the journalists.
The assault followed the refusal of a police rider to stop after running his unregistered motorbike into a vehicle of the News Times Corporation, which was then carrying the journalists.
The rider reportedly attempted to run away but the driver of the vehicle chased and caught up with.
A misunderstanding then ensued, and other police officers joined their colleagues to beat up the journalists, detained one of them for hours and another was hospitalized.
