Kaduna, June 18, 2019 (NAN) Kaduna State Peace Commission in partnership with Plan International and Kuka Centre has organised a three day capacity building training on conflict management, peace building and dialogue for 30 youths from Kajuru Local Government area.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Priscilla Ankut said on Tuesday in Kaduna, North West Nigeria, at the opening of the training, that it was part of efforts being made toward sustainable peace in the crisis prone local government area.

According to her, the youths, aged between 15 and 35, were carefully selected from among Muslims and Christians and from different ethnic background to serve as influencers for peace in the area.

She noted that after the capacity building, the selected youths would be knowledgeable about their roles and how to be better influencers in bringing about positive changes in their communities.

“This the right time to engage with different stakeholder to sustain the fragile peace that we are enjoying in Kajuru at the moment.

“People in this room are considered to be influencers and community leaders in their own area.

“We are to build and strengthen their capacity in conflict prevention and encourage them to find more peaceful ways of resolving conflicts when they arise than choosing violent path.

“The youths will also be equipped with skills to meditate and resolve conflict in their community when the need arise,’’ she said.

Ankut said that the Commission would sustain the programme, scale up the number with time and engage as much as they can to return peace to the local government area.

On his part, the Project Coordinator, Plan International, Mr Bedwom Elias identified five communities in the state where they would be engaging youths.

He listed the communities to include; Dagama, Kasuwan Magani, Birnin Gwari, Rigasa, and Sabon Gari in Zaria.

“We saw the need to engage youths from Kajuru Local Government through KSYPA, to have the skill necessary for conflict management and peace building.

“They are expected to go back to their communities, come up with initiative and look at issues they have and reason of violence and ethno religious crisis.

“They are meant to discuss this issue with community members and come up with interventions that they can implement in the community.

“This is basically a community based project and will be engaging new phase by September,” he said.

He explained that the programme would run for two years for them to be peace champions.

“We engage them positively; we are giving them the opportunity to participate on issues that border on development.”

He noted that 100 youths were identified across the state, with 20 in each of the five communities, and 30 from Kajuru that would be trained in the next three days.

The Chairman, Kajuru Truth and Reconciliation Committee, Mr Patrick Maigari thanked the organizers of the event for their efforts, describing the training as apt.

He urged the participants to imbibe the training, so as to enthrone sustainable peace in the area.

The representative of the Kuka Centre, Rev. Victor Barde assured that with such gesture, peace would return to Kaduna state.
