Commonwealth Games Ghana organizes workshop for media

Accra, Nov. 25, GNA- The Commonwealth Games Ghana through the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has organized a one-day workshop on building sports brands through Social media for media persons attached to sports Federations and Associations in Ghana.

The event held at the media center of the Accra Sports Stadium saw about 50 journalists in attendance.

In his delivery, the Chairman of the 2023 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the Africa Games in Ghana, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare spoke on how the media can use social media and branding to develop their respective disciplines.

He said, journalists should support federations to brand the disciplines well to create wealth.

He also called on journalists to be mindful of what they share on social media which could be negative in branding themselves.

On his part, reporting on the least financed sports, including hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball, handball helps in branding and creates an avenue to attract sponsorships from corporate entities.

He urged the media to first, understand the game to give an accurate report and use the right terminologies.
Dr. Kobby Mensah, a lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School talked about building sports brands through journalism.
He mentioned that, brand management, brand journalism, branding terminology (Brand Awareness and Brand Association), Brand Image, Brand Identity, and Brand Personality can help influence a journalist in their career.

Mr. Ben Nunoo-Mensah, the President of CWG and doubles as the president of the GOC expressed delight in holding the event and optimistic the training would positively impact the media.

He said « I am happy with the turnout of events especially the media. I hope the workshop would have a great impact on journalists’ reportage and how the media can use social media and branding to help the least financed sports.”

Sports personalities present at the event were the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission on Sports, Madam Elizabeth King, the Executive Director of Women in Sports Association, Madam Gloria Commodore and the President of WOSPAG, Mrs. Joyce Mahama.

Also present were some Executive members of the GOC. President of the Ghana Netball Association, Rev. Nikoi, the President of Ghana Volleyball Association, Mr. Paul Atchoe, and Mr. Evans Yeboah, the President of Ghana Badminton Association.

At the end of the event, the media present at the workshop were awarded certificates.
