Court Sentences Man, 20, To Two Years In Prison For Statutory Rape

  15 Octobre      49        Société (44856),

ZWEDRU, Oct. 14(LINA) – The 7th Judicial Circuit Court in Grand Gedeh County has sentenced a 20-year- old man identified as Charles Washington to two-year prison term for Statutory Rape.

According to court records, defendant Washington had regular sexual intercourse with a 15 year- old minor identified only as M.D. from February 2020 to July 2020 in the Duwayee Town Community near Zwedru.

The sexual intercourse was done with the consent of both parties; but under Liberian law their consent is no excuse because the crime of Statutory Rape is a felony of the first degree.

The maximum punishment for such crime is life imprisonment, while the minimum punishment is 10 years in prison.

When the case was called for hearing and during arraignment, the defendant pleaded guilty.

Based on the facts presented by the prosecution and the sincerity of the defendant, who admitted committing the crime, his counsel requested the court to mitigate his sentence, and defendant Washington’s prison term was reduced to two years, beginning October 2020.

The decision of the Court is to serve as a deterrent to other adult males to refrain from having sexual intercourse with minors with or without their consent.

Defendant Washington has been sent to the National Palace of Corrections in Grand Gedeh County to serve his prison term.

The defendant was represented by Attorney D. Mart Kangar, Public Defender of Grand Gedeh County, while the complainant was represented by Attorneys Isaac Williams and Joseph Suah, County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney of Grand Gedeh County.

The Court was presided over by George S. Wiles, Resident Judge of Grand Gedeh County.
