Agona-Nkwanta, Dec. 7, GNA – Mr Moses Kojo Boafo, the Municipal Director for the National Commission on Civic Education at Ahanta West Municipality, has encouraged women not to despise themselves but take active roles in leadership to ensure a more balanced society.
« You have inherent attributes to contribute meaningfully to society, do not stay at one corner with your God-given talents neither should you despise yourselves as women ».
The NCCE Municipal Director gave the encouragement during the inception meeting of a project initiated by Daasgift, an NGO with support from International Finance Corporation, on ways to integrate women in fisheries decision making process along the coastal district of the Western Region.
« Research show that women have been neglected in most activities in the fisheries industry though they were key players in the supply chain process and the earlier their inputs are considered the better for the overall development of the fisheries sector ».
The co-management in the governance process within the fisheries sector project sought to debunk the perception that it was only men who could lift up the trade of fishing and other related activities to ensuring that women became part and parcel of every process particularly pertinent decision that affected the growth, development and beauty of the fishing industry.
The inception meeting was to introduce the project to the leadership of the District and other stakeholders. In attendance were ‘konkohemaas’, chief fishermen, the planning officer of the Municipality among others.
Mr Paul Acheampong, the Planning Officer of the Assembly, lauded the project and prayed that by the end of the project, women would be more empowered to take up leadership roles in the co-management concept in the fisheries sector.
