Tamale, Nov. 8, GNA- Northern Regional Centre for Culture supported by UNICEF, Ghana, on Thursday launched a drama project to stop child abuse in the Northern Region.
The project is aimed at promoting better ways to treat children and also to create awareness to encourage the public to desist from all forms of child abuse in the Region.
Madam Gladys N. Tang, the Director of the Northern Regional Centre for Culture, said the project was to enlighten parents, children and the general public about the dangers in abusing children, which needed to be addressed.
According to her, some of the parents neglected their children leading to child trafficking.
She added that mostly, parents in the rural areas prevented their children from going to school, thereby denying them their right to education, and eventually sending them off to early marriages or to undertake Kayaye just to make income for the family.
She said it was the duty of the parents to take the children to schools, but if that did not work, then the extended family was expected to take up that responsibility.
After the lunching of the project, there was a drama performance on child abuse to educate the parents to stop child abuse in diverse forms.
It was envisaged that the drama would influence parents to be committed to take good care of their children and send them to school.
