Accra, Nov. 18, GNA -Ecobank Ghana marked its day on Saturday with a donation of assorted items to the Chance for Children Orphanage at Hebron near Medie.

Mr Dan Sackey, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana and Regional Executive for Anglophone West Africa, who led a team of Ecobank Ghana staff to the orphanage as part of the 2018 Ecobank Day initiative, said the Bank takes its responsibility of assisting the community seriously.

He said the Bank was focused on undertaking social work as part of its corporate social responsibility towards the communities in which it operates.

The Ecobank Day is an event that is celebrated across the 33 African countries where Ecobank is present.

The theme for Ecobank Day 2018, which focuses on the plight of vulnerable children and the difficulties they face is: ‘Supporting Young lives’.

« While our strategic focus is very much on positively reshaping the African banking landscape, and servicing our customers with cost effective and convenient financial products, we also deeply care about people in our local communities, » Mr Sackey said.

It is in this connection that the bank launched the very first Ecobank Day initiative in 2013 purposed to give back to the communities we serve.

The initiative allows staff to participate in the Bank’s CSR activities by giving back not just money but to volunteer their time to work with local people and support the important financial contribution made to improve the lives of the more vulnerable members of communities, https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif, Mr Sackey said.

Africa is home to a third of the world’s orphan population. UNICEF defines an orphan as a child under the age of 18 who has lost one or both parents, no matter what the cause of death. Globally there are 140 million orphans and 52 million live in Africa.

« With so many vulnerable young people in need, we are committed to supporting them by helping the care centres where they live. We are happy to be associated with Chance for Children Orphanage and to work with the management to identify their needs, » he said.

Mr Sackey said besides the assorted items, Ecobank Ghana would refurbish and equip the computer laboratory of Chance for Children Orphanage with computers, chairs and tables.

The Bank will also provide a year’s access to internet to enhance research and learning while there are plans to scale up internet connectivity for the next five years once discussions are concluded.

There would also be the provision of scholarships to students from primary through to Senior High School and up to the tertiary level, Mr Sackey said, adding that there would be health support to ensure the well-being of the inmates through medical supplies.

« Ecobankers have given up their time to be here to support today’s activities and others have committed to work with management to give off their time to mentor the children. I am sure you will agree that this shows how strongly we feel about giving back to our local communities. It makes me very proud both the Bank I represent and its lifeblood -our staff. We can all make a difference, it starts with each of us, » he added.

Mr Ernest Nii Noi Addo, Manager of Chance for Children, thanked Ecobank for the support, saying the donation would go a long way to meet the needs of the children.

Meanwhile, Ecobank Ghana has held a forum to draw attention to the plight of orphans in the society.
