MONROVIA, August 29 (LINA) – Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhang Yue says Chinese enterprises in Liberia are contributing to the capacity building process of Liberia.
He said as a means of fulfilling their corporate social responsibility, these enterprises have established the China Enterprise Scholarship in eight local universities and colleges and the Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC) with over 220 students awarded scholarships recently.
Ambassador Zhang made the statement Friday at a farewell reception for 2015/2016 Chinese scholarship beneficiaries held at the Chinese Embassy in Congo Town outside Monrovia.
The Chinese envoy said education is the cornerstone in the rebuilding process of Liberia, and that youth empowerment is the key to Liberia’s transformation and prosperity, stressing that as a reliable partner, China has done a lot in various
parts of this field.
He said the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship program has been established at the University of Liberia, William V.S Tubman University and the Cuttington University and that over 90 students from the three universities are currently benefiting from the scholarship each year.
According to him, this year alone, the Chinese Government has provided 25 Chinese Government Scholarships, 16 slots of one-year Master Degree Scholarship and 275 training opportunities for Liberian students, professionals and military officials to study in China.
Ambassador Yue disclosed that besides education, cultural exchange is also an important part of the friendly ties subsisting between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China.
He cited the Wushu, also referred to as Kung Fu, which is a unique part of Chinese martial arts, that has been established in Liberia under the banner « Liberia National Wushu Association (LNWA).
The Chinese envoy said the association has even participated in international competitions.
