FDA Task Force, Local Authorities Agree To Prevent Forest Loss

  10 Juin      45        Environnement/Eaux/Forêts (6388),

FISH TOWN, June 9 (LINA) – The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Integrated Task Force and local authorities have agreed to coordinate, collaborate and cooperate to prevent forest loss.

The parties reached the agreement at the end of a meeting in Fish Town, River Gee County.

The three C’s (coordination, collaboration and cooperation) are pillars on which forest protection will rely and thrive to succeed, according to FDA Region IV Forester Paul F. Duo.

He pointed out that a forest lost is lost opportunity for future generations to see, as pharmacists’ research has shown the forest as a great asset for medicines that communities need for treatment to survive, noting that Liberia is blessed with green forest in West Africa, if not the continent at large.

The Integrated Task Force was set up recently with support from UN Development Program with a mandate to monitor the protection of forests in national parks.

It comprises ministries and agencies of government including Agriculture, Internal Affairs, Mines & Energy, LIS, Liberia Land Authority and Environment Protection Agency, according to Duo, who is the head of the group in Fish Town City.

Selection by locals forms part of the monitoring exercise to see full implementation of projects by partners INGOs, NGOs, CNO, among others, to improve the living standard of the rural poor, he added..

Meanwhile, the FDA Region IV official underscored the need for maintenance of national forests, noting that forests are to be protected for succeeding generations:

The Fish Town meeting will be followed by similar meetings in Sinoe and Grand Gedeh counties to get local authorities actively involved in achieving this goal, he told th Liberia News Agency..

He appreciated of the hospitality accorded the team by River Gee County Superintendent Philip Q. Nyennoh during the June 2-4 meeting which was followed by visitation of relevant forest sites.

Meanwhile, the planting of sign posts on demarcated lines on the River Gee side of the Grebo/Krahn National Park is underway to separate the park from community forest.

Regional forester Duo added that similar exercise, however, remains stalled, awaiting negotiation with residents on the Grand Gedeh side as a result of the recent call to re-consider validated demarcation boundaries at recent boundary harmonization meetings near Grand Kru and Sapo National Parks.

Cocoa, lowland farm rice, aqua-culture/fishery, poultry, animal husbandry, vegetable production, piggery, along with housing and modern hotels, motels and guest houses to host future guests, are among projects under consideration for donor support to make the parks successful in Southeastern Liberia, according to the FDA Region IV Forester.
