Accra, Feb. 11, GNA – Mr Joseph Amoah, the Ghana Shippers’ Council Committee Chairman of the Ashanti Region, has applauded government for introducing the paperless system at the country’s port.
He said it has been an enormous help to relieve shippers of import duty hassles.
Mr Amoah said the current system which facilitated electronic payments, has minimized the drudgery of cumbersome bureaucracy – human interface and paper movements.
« Better still, the cost-saving system has also reduced corruption at the port as well as enhanced faster and a more accurate duty payables », he said.
Mr Amoah said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during its annual get-together held over the week-end.
He said the new system allowed shippers to clear their goods in a matter of four hours unlike the old system, which took a week or more.
The Chairman said the system’s proactive check and balance procedures has ensured well-coordinated periodic checks by officers and made it more formidable.
He called on relevant authorities and stakeholders, to intensify education on paperless transition.
The paperless system, he said, is an operating system in which all relevant information are captured on a database for easy access and tracking, thus reducing the use of paper significantly.
