BUCHANAN, June 11 (LINA) – The Government of Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to protect freedom of the press and of expression.

Making the commitment at the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Annual Awards event in Buchanan at the weekend, Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs, Eugene L. Fahngon, said President George Weah is committed to supporting activities of the media to advance good governance in the country.

Minister Fahngon noted that the event coincides with the time the government is about to pass the Bill to decriminalize libel and slander in a bid to promote free speech and freedom of the press and expression.

He noted that free speech and freedom of the press are fundamental to the tenets of democracy and as such the government will ensure that it is upheld.

Meanwhile, the Information Ministry official has urged journalists to exemplify the highest degree of patriotism by reporting balanced, credible and accurate news and information to the public.

Deputy Minister Fahngon, on behalf of the Ministry of Information, congratulated winners of the various awards and encouraged them to continue to do more for the advancement of the profession.
