“Despite all of these challenges, Liberia is the only country within West Africa in the upper Guinea forest ecosystem with the potential to provide climate stability for the entire region”, Tarpeh asserted.

According to hom, this makes Liberia one of the countries in the world with the deepest carbon sink or carbon sponge.

“Our country is naturally endowed with an environment of rich natural biodiversity, fisheries, lakes, waterfalls and a coastal line of 350 miles,” he said.

Liberia’s abundance of water, sunshine and bimorph sources hold great potential for profited reduction and sustainable development, it is against this backdrop, that the National Conference on climate change and the environment will ensure efforts in enforcing Liberia’s commitment to sustainable development, including the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aimed at addressing climate change from mitigation and adaptation standpoint as well as strengthening compliance and enforcement of the Environmental Protection Management Law of Liberia.

The NDCs are the height of the Paris Climate Agreement, where Liberia joined the Paris Accor in 2015 and in 2018, and the legislature ratified the agreement.

The upcoming conference primary objectives are basically on these pillars; “the insurance of sustained environmental policies in seeking international commitment for the implementation of the climate action plan of Liberia which is the NDC, strengthening existing cooperation, building new partnerships among stakeholders, promoting a cultural of compliance and enforcement of environmental policies and standards in the public and private sectors.

It will also seek to promote and reinforce public awareness and education that will enable stakeholders make informed decisions on the environment and natural resources and aligning the National development plan, which is the Pro poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD), towards climate resilient and environmentally sensitive projects.
