Great Olympics pip Bechem United

Accra, June 23, GNA – Maxwell Abbey Quaye’s solitary strike for Great Olympics proved crucial as they edged Bechem United 1-0 in a match-week 30 encounter played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

It was Maxwell Quaye’s 10th goal of the season which pushed Great Olympics into the top four spots.

Bechem United were awarded a penalty in the opening minutes of the encounter after Referee Eso Morrison adjudged a hand ball incident against Great Olympics player Jamaldeen Haruna.

Stephen Kwaku produced a good save to deny Bechem United Captain Moro Salifu from 12 yards who couldn’t capitalize from the rebound as he struck his shot wide.

The ‘Dade Boys’ were certainly missing the services of their talisman Gladson Awako as they failed to test Bechem goalkeeper Prince Asempa past the half-hour mark.

Great Olympics were lackluster in their approach to the game as they struggled to make any meaningful incursions upfront.

Great Olympics marksman Maxwell Abbey nearly surprised Bechem goalkeeper Prince Asempa with a 40-yard long ranger but the keeper was able to adjust his steps to keep the game barren.

The first half ended scoreless.

Great Olympics started the second half the better side and deservedly took the lead in the 55th minute through Maxwell Abbey who struck home from close range after the Bechem defence failed to clear their lines.

Kwabena Boateng should have scored the cushion goal for Great Olympics three minute later but his shot inside the penalty box narrowly missed the target.

Bechem United were certainly stunned by the strike from Abbey but responded very well with series of attacking incursions which were curtailed by the Great Olympics defence.

The Hunters were certainly missing the services of their top marksman Hafiz Kokoni as they lacked the cutting edge to break the solid Olympics defence.

Great Olympics held on for all three points.
