Inter-District Sports Festival ends in Yendi

Accra, Aug. 04, GNA – The 22nd Basic Inter-District Sports Festival, has ended at the Yendi Senior High School Sports Oval, with two new records in the Discuss and Javelin.

The Girls Discuss record was in 2016 with a distance of 18.35m by Dreiunoh Bendicta of Bole District at Damango and broken by the same Dreiunoh, this year with a distance of 23.43m at Yendi Municipal.

In the Boys Javelin, a record in 2001 by Awudu Yussif of Tamale Metro at Savelugu with a distance of 44.40m, was broken by Njognan Emmanuel of Nanumba North District this year with a distance of 45.78m in Yendi Municipality.

In a closing address read on his behalf Alhaji Mohammed Haroon, the Northern Regional Director of Education said, the Northern Region Basic Sports Association and the Regional Directorate of Education have every reason to support and promote the festivals, because new talents are discovered and natured to become national and international stars through such activities.

Alhaji Haroon noted that, sports has become very critical in the development of many nations, hence its inclusion in the educational curriculum to produce healthy and productive citizens.

He appealed to all the officials, coaches and students to desist from using performance enhancing drugs in sports.

According to the Regional Director, 33 coaches and 174 athletes made up of boys and girls have been selected for the up-coming Inter-Regional Sports Festival in Koforidua from 10th – 19th August.

He said the team would report at Tamale Senior High School on August 7 to commence preparations.
