MONROVIA, November 26. 2015 (LINA) – Japan and Africare-Liberia have signed a US$90,000 grant agreement t construct a support center for small-scale farmers in Gbarnga , Bong County.
According to Japanese Ambassador to Liberia, Kaoru Yoshimura, the farmers’ support center will be provided the necessary equipment that would contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security.
He said the center will enable small-scale farmers to reach value chain, especially in horticulture, through training and matching with small agri-business and cooperatives.
The grant agreement was signed Wednesday evening at a ceremony held at the Africare-Liberia head office in Congo Town, outside Monrovia.
The Japanese envoy pointed out that the Japan Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) scheme, which was introduced in Liberia in 1989, mainly focuses on supporting communities with basic needs in the domain of health, agriculture, education, water and sanitation and relief.
Ambassador Yoshimura emphasized that the Japanese Government is also implementing food assistance for sustainable rice production in collaboration with the World Food Program in Bong County as well as the grassroots project area which will continue to be supported in the agriculture sector.
The grant was signed by Ambassador Yoshimura on the behalf of the Japanese Government and Madam Catherine H. Lumeh, Administrative Officer of Africare –Liberia on behalf of her agency.
