Accra, Jan. 17, GNA – The Koforidua Zongo market is to be upgraded to help decongest the Koforidua central business area.
Under the project, 80 lockable stores would be constructed around the market to help secure the market and provide extra security for the traders of the market.
This was disclosed by Mr Isaac Appau-Gyesi, the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive, at a forum with the traders of the Koforidua Zongo market and the Zongo community.
He said the new market would be provided with a 20 seater modern toilet facility, a crèche and a lorry park for haulage trucks so that business owners in the central business area would have their goods discharged there and use small trucks to move the goods into the central business area.
Mr Appau-Gyesi assured the traders at the market that they would have the first option to acquire the stores when completed and the Assembly would come up with some schemes for those of them who would not get the money to pay to pay for the cost of the stores by instalments.
He said the upgrading of the Koforidua Zongo market was strategically designed to help improve upon economic activities in the market and the Koforidua Zongo and called for the support of the Zongo community.
Mr Appau-Gyesi said to ensure that the project is completed on schedule, the project has been awarded to three contractors.
He said under the contract, the contractors are required to employ workers for the project from the Zongo community to help provide employment to the women and young people of the area.
Alhaji Yusif Amdani, the Eastern Regional Chief Imam, appealed to residents of the Zongo community to offer their support to the project to ensure that it succeeds.
