Accra, April 28.GNA – Mr. Kwaku Okyere and Madam Leticia Amponsah Mensah, have won the 6th edition of the South African Freedom Day Golf Tournament in the male and female categories respectively.
The one-day event, meant to celebrate South Africa and its freedom day, took place at the Sakumono Celebrity Golf Course.
Mr. Okyere beat Mr Emmanuel Quarcoo and Mr Robert Abbey to second and third place respectively, with a handicap of 39 making 20 fronts and 19 back in the male Group A.
Madam Leticia Amponsah Mensah, who won both the longest drive and the closest to pin drive for the day of 6.10 meters beat Mary Prempeh and Nana Bema Tackie to second and third place respectively.
Mr. Ernest Boateng, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Global Media Alliance, the organizers for the tournament noted that, it was aimed at bringing together competing golfers both from the Ghana and South African Communities, to celebrate a memorable day on the calendar of South Africans and Africa in general.
According to him, the event among other things was to offer an opportunity for all South African businesses, diplomatic corps, corporate Ghana and individuals to network and have fun through the game of Golf.
“Freedom Day commemorates the beginning of democracy in South Africa. It is a remarkable day in the history of South Africa and Africa for that matter, bringing to mind stalwarts like Nelson Mandela.
“The golf tournament therefore serves as a good platform to engage each other and to share ideas on what the future holds for the South African Business Community in Ghana,” he added.
Madam Lulama Xingwana, South African High Commissioner to Ghana, who was the Special Guest of Honour for the day said, South Africa was happy about the tournament, which was aimed at celebrating their independence.
She said, it reminds South Africans of a historical day that South Africa voted for its freedom and independence.
“The day is embedded in our history and hearts forever and South African freedom is to celebrate all of Africa and its independence, which serves as a freedom for all Africans”.
The Freedom Day Tournament, which is an annual golf celebration, also had Jenny Hong Le winning the female Group B over Catherine Fabbi and Ama Morgan respectively as in the male Group B, Mr John Blay beat Daniel Aryee and Mordecai to second and third respectively as Mr Albert Loubser, won the male closest to pin with 1.44 meters drive and Mr Jerry Tetteh completing the longest drive in the male category.
The winners for both the male and female Group A categories, which was the flagship event, saw winners Mr Kwaku Okyere and Madam Leticia Amponsah Mensah getting an all paid for return flight ticket to South Africa as well as assorted gifts from sponsors.
