MONROVIA, Sept. 26 (LINA) – Ahead of the conduct of the National Population and Housing Census, the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has launched the Training of Trainers (ToT’s) workshop for 592 trainees.

The objective of the ToT workshop is to adequately train the 592 part7icipants on how to conduct Census Enumeration using Computer-Aided Personal Interview (CAP) technology.

Speaking Monday at the launch of the ToT training at the William V.S. Tubman High School in Monrovia, the acting Director LISGIS, Wilmot F. Smith, said the training will be carried out incessantly for ten days.

Smith said “the aim of the worship is to provide adequate training for 592 trainees who will aid in the training process at the County and District levels before the actual Census Enumeration,” adding that, “at the end of the training, it is expected that the 592 trainees will train about 17,071 Enumerators/Supervisors nationwide.”

According to him, it is also expected that participants will be able to understand the duties and responsibilities of Census Enumerators/Supervisor as stipulated in the manual of instructions, train Census Enumerators and Supervisors, be able to provide clear instructions to Enumerators and Supervisors at the county and district levels training.

“On this first day of the ToT workshop, we want to inform you that before this exercise, we had 110 persons and out of that number 40 persons were selected to form part of this exercise.

Before this, we had master trainers workshop and those that were also in the geo-mapping exercise trained as well,” Smith said.

According to him, the ToT workshop was divided into six regions in Liberia for Montserrado County, noting, “We have two places, Rural and Greater Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount County, Bomi, Margibi and Grand Bassa counties respectively.

“We have assembled the best facilitators; we want you to be focused and ask all the hard questions because the work you do will determine the outcome and output of the Census results, your transportation, DSA everything will be provided in order for Liberian to produce its first digital census,” Smith said.

For his part, the proxy of the UNFPA Resident Representative to Liberia, Dr. Bocaj Taiwo, urged participants to be more focused and attend all the sections because they will be training others.

« We have been working with LISGIS together with other partners to ensure that the 5th National Census is conducted adequately, completely and acceptably. We will rely on you all for this exercise to be a great success; we know you will cooperate with us for a successful census in Liberia,” Taiwo said.

Speaking on behalf of Montserrado County Superintendent, Florence Brandy, Mr. Eric Vaye, who is Assistant Superintendent for Fiscal Affairs, encouraged participants to take the workshop seriously, saying, « We want to urge you all to kindly take this training seriously.”

“The Census requires the enumeration of the entire population of Liberia and non-Liberians, so we therefore require the cooperation and involvement of all citizens and non-citizens,” Vaye noted.
