GBARNGA, Aug. 11 (LINA) – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has charged and forwarded to court a juvenile, 13, identified as David Kollie for allegedly raping a nine year-old girl in Maleke Town, Suakoko District in Bong County.
The LNP Women and Children Division Central Regional Inspector, Mr. Gerald Holder, told the Liberia News Agency that Kollie was sent to the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga after police preliminary investigation at the Gbarnga Central Police Station.
Inspector Holder explained that Kollie walked into the home of the victim while she was cooking and took her into an unfinished building in Maleke Town where he sexually abused her.
He further said the victim told her mother what had transpired when her mother discovered blood in the kitchen where the victim was cooking, and noticed that her daughter was in bad condition.
According to Holder, the mother then rushed her daughter to the C.B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital in Gbarnga where doctors pronounced that the girl had been tempered with.
« Before the act, the alleged rapist gave a cell phone to the victim to convince her to have sex with him but the girl refused it, » he disclosed.
The LNP Inspector said Kollie admitted promising the girl one hundred and fifty Liberian dollars if she concealed the information following the act.
Meanwhile, Inspector Holder is recommending to government to create more awareness on sexual gender-based violence (SGBV), especially in rural Liberia in order to minimize rape cases in the country.
He also recommended that those found guilty of the crime be sentenced to harsh punishment, including life imprisonment where death occurs during the act.
The alleged rapist Kollie admitted committing the crime, but said, he was passing to go and fetch water in the community when the victim called him to her house to have sex with her.
Rape is having sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent or against her will.
Meanwhile, sex with a girl below 18 years of age under Liberian law is considered Statutory Rape, regardless of whether she consents to it or not.
