Praia, May 28 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde today confirmed its first qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with the international rhythmic gymnastics athlete Márcia Lopes, through a wild-card (invitation) formalized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The Cabo Verdean Olympic Committee was notified this morning by the IOC reporting that Márcia Lopes, referred to as one of Africa’s most highly rated gymnasts, becomes the first Cabo Verdean athlete to confirm a place in Tokyo, so the COC has already congratulated the Cabo Verdean Gymnastics Federation for her achievement.
“The news reached the Cabo Verdean Olympic Committee that made contact with the Cabo Verdean Gymnastics Federation, which in turn accepted the invitation to participate,” states the COC note, noting that with this invitation Márcia Lopes will represent Cabo Verde and the African continent in the sport in the largest sports showcase on the planet.
“In an atypical pandemic time, Cabo Verde has suffered greatly from the postponement of qualifying events and changes in qualifying rules so it is only now beginning to confirm places in the largest sporting and cultural event in the world,” the note reads.
