SINJE TOWN, Nov. 5 (LINA) -The Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BM,MC) has begun renovation of the Yamasseh Bridge in Gola Konneh District, Grand Cape Mount County.
In an interview with the Liberia News Agency recently, the BMMC Community Relations Superintendent, Henry Vincent, said the company has taken the initiative to renovate the bridge in fulfillment of its corporate social responsibility.
According to Mr. Vincent, the company’s gesture is also intended to relieve residents of the area of the difficulties they encountered in the past due to the deplorable state of the bridge.
Vincent disclosed that the Yamasseh Bridge, which was made out of planks will now be replaced with steel plates and iron poles.
He added that the renovation is being implemented by Expat Engineers, a private company which is currently working with the company.
The BMMC official could not indicate the exact cost of the renovation, but put it at several thousand United States dollars.
Vincent stressed that the response of the company will help to cement the cordial working relationship between it and citizens of the district.
« I think if we continue to engage the community like this, it will be a big boost for us and our work will go on freely, » said Vincent, adding, « There will be no intimidation because we help to provide road access to the citizens. »
Meanwhile, residents of the district have commended the Bea Mountain Mining Corporation for the initiative.
They believe that the renovation of the bridge will bring relief to them as they had been faced with challenges in plying the road.
The Yamasseh Bridge, which lies between Lofa Bridge and Gola Camp in Grand Cape Mount County, and connects Gola Konneh District to Gbarpolu County, has been in deplorable condition for several years now.
The bridge was a sort of death trap that claimed the lives of several commuters.
With the most recent death last month of a lady after the motorbike she was riding was involved in an
accident on the bridge.
The death of the lady sparked a day-long protest by motorcyclists in the area.
