MONROVIA, March 1 (LINA) – The Ministry of Youth & Sports continues to champion the use of sports as a tool for youth development and the promotion of reconciliation and social cohesion.
The Ministry said this was done through the conduct of All Universities Games, an annual multi-sports event of the Ministry in 2019.
In the Ministry’s 2019 Annual Report, it said for the first time, there was an inclusion of female soccer in the competition.
According the report, the 2019 Intra-Governmental Tournament (IGT) was held under the theme “Promoting Wellness through Sports” and ended successfully in a fascinating panache.
The report indicated that 2019 edition, however, witnessed the introduction of a basketball component in addition to the pre-existing football and kickball games.
The Report further stated that the Bureau of Sports assessed existing sporting facilities of counties selected to host the preliminary rounds of the 2019/2020 National County Sports Meet for the purpose of determining county readiness to host the games.
The Report also said that the 2019 edition of the Emmet Harold McGowan Up-Country Basketball tournament was held at the Ganta United Methodist Gymnasium in Ganta City, Nimba County, between in November 2019 under the theme “Promoting Academic Excellence through Basketball.”
The Report disclosed that six high schools took part in the tournament, namely: Ganta United Methodist High School (GUMS), St. Mary’s High School Sanniquille, and the St. Martin’s High School Gbarngar, Bong County.
Others were William V.S. Tubman Gray High School Gbarngar (T. Grey), Salayea
Central High School and Lutheran Technical Institute (LTI), both in Salayea District.
St. Martin’s Catholic High School, in Gbanga, Bong County, emerged victorious as Champions.
The Ministry then expressed gratitude to all its partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, Mercy Corps, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, FAO, ILO, WFP, USAID and friendly governments and bilateral institutions, especially the People’s Republic of China, Sweden and French Governments, European Union, among others, for their profound and meaningful contributions to the enhancement of the Ministry’s programs and activities.
