Accra, June. 27, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has organised an advocacy workshop for media practitioners in the Southern Zone of the country, in Accra.
The workshop, in partnership with the European Union (EU), is aimed at grooming selected journalists to understand the mandate of the NCCE and to empower them to give adequate publicity to activities and programmes of the Commission.
The workshop also equipped the journalists with skills to understand and appreciate civic related issues to guide their content development and reportage.
It also sensitised them, as media ambassadors, to join in the awareness creation campaign of the Commission.
The workshop is on the theme: « Strengthening Civic Consciousness through Media Advocacy. »
Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere, former Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, in a presentation, urged Ghanaians, especially Journalists, to study the nation’s constitution.
He said a better understanding of the constitution by the citizenry could help educate them on issues of their rights and responsibilities, and urged broadcast media to dedicate part of their airtime to the NCCE to promote their programmes and activities.
Mr Bernard Avle, a Broadcast Journalist, said Ghana was not doing well in the promotion of citizens’ rights because the media was not playing its watchdog role properly.
He called on journalists to be committed and play their gatekeeping and watchdog role effectively.
Ms Josephine Nkrumah, Chairperson, NCCE, said the workshop was to strengthen media advocacy in shaping the civic consciousness of Ghanaians.
The core mandate of the NCCE is to promote and sustain Ghana’s democracy through civic education and this is carried out through various flagship programmes, initiatives, engagements with the citizenry and in collaboration with various stakeholders.
