NVTI students trained in health and safety

Takoradi, Dec. 7, GNA – Seaweld Engineering Ghana Limited has trained students of the National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI)in Takoradi on health and safety as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR).

The students were taken through Ergonomics, Safe Lifting Techniques and Fire Safety and were also screened for malaria and Hepatitis B.

Mr Makafui Gomado, the Tender Coordinator for Seaweld Ghana Limited, explained that the NVTI was selected because its field of study fell in line with the operations of the company.

He noted that the NVTI, for instance, taught welding and fabrication which was mostly theoretical, hence the decision to provide some practical aspect of the training to students.

Mr Gomado advised them to be focused and take their studies seriously to fill the manpower gap of the industry.

He encouraged them to strive to become better professionals backed by appropriate certifications to make them highly employable.

Mr Alexander Hammond, the Health and Safety Manager, who took the students through safety techniques on lifting, said inappropriate lifting methods were likely to cause back injuries and therefore the need to apply proper lifting techniques to ensure safety.

« Never obstruct your vision with an object you are carrying, never forget to wear personal protective gears. Note that the best way to lift an object is to squat and not bend to avoid damaging your spine, » he said.
Touching on Fire Safety, he schooled the students on the use of fire extinguishers to douse fire and demonstrated how to carefully exit a building during fire outbreak, among some other dos and don’ts.

Madam Mary Owusu, the Head of Psychiatric Unit of the Takoradi Hospital, explained the causes and effects of ailments including headaches and migraine to the students and advised them to eat healthy foods, practice healthy living and reduce stress.

She said that would help in avoiding headaches adding; « Practice wellness at school and at home by eating well, exercising and stretching from time to time ».

Ms Ruby Stop, Administrator for Seaweld Ghana Ltd, said the company had undertaken series of CSR projects including sponsoring the education of some students and donating hospital equipment to 27 hospitals across the country.

She, however, said engaging students in training was the first the company had undertaken to contribute to the well-being and development of society.

She stressed that all activities in the industry needed certification and encouraged the students to research in their various fields of study to enable them acquire the requisite certificates.

The Acting Deputy Director for the School, Mr Bernard Mensah, expressed gratitude to the company for the insightful training and appealed to other corporate institutions to support the school through resourcing and equipment to enhance teaching and the learning.
