MONROVIA, July 15 (LINA) – Four officers of the Police Support Unit (PSU) linked to the Kingsville shooting which led to the death of one person and the injury of several others have been incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison on multiples charges.

The Liberia National Police on Monday, July 15, 2019 forwarded to the Monrovia City Court for prosecution the four PSU officers for allegedly causing the death of Abraham Tumay and inflicting serious bodily injuries on Saah Saah and Dave Mombo.

The four men were on Monday arraigned before the Monrovia City Court to answer to the charges levied against them.

Defendant Emmanuel S. Melikamue was disrobed from the Liberia National Police, acquainted with his Miranda rights in the presence of his lawyer, investigated and subsequently charged with the crime of ‘Negligent Homicide’ for carelessly causing the death of Abraham Tumay and inflicting serious bodily injuries on two persons by misusing his assigned weapon during a violent protest along the Monrovia -Kakata highway.

Defendant Morris M. Dahn was also charged with criminal facilitation while Josephus M. Lewis and Thomas W. Pobleh, were charged with ‘aggravated assault’. “The defendants are charged in violation of Chapter 14, Subchapter A, Section 14.3 Chapter 14 Subchapter B Section 14.220 and chapter 10 sections 10.2 of the Revised Penal Code of the Republic of Liberia.

The police charge sheet indicated that on June 24, 2019 some aggrieved residents of Kingsville Township staged an illegal protest by setting up roadblocks, thereby obstructing the free flow of human and vehicular traffic.

According to reports, the riot was triggered by the alleged delay in Police investigation into the mysterious deaths of Thomas Kollie, aged ten, and Elijah Porluma, aged nine, whose lifeless bodies were discovered on June 30, 2019 in a nearby bush in the township.

The parents of the deceased, according to the Police, reported to the township’s commissioner, Augustus Binda, referencing the mysterious disappearance of the children who went to sell on May 30, 2019 and did not return.

Police investigation stated that they launched an investigation into the mysterious deaths of the children and four persons were brought in as persons of interest.

The Police charge sheet pointed out that the protesters did not wait for the police to conclude their investigation, but staged a subsequent roadblock which resulted in the shooting after Police could not contain the protesters.

The Police charge sheet also stated that though the rioters were violent in their actions when the PSU officers attempted to remove the second roadblock, there was no imminent life-threatening action posed by the rioters that warranted the use of firearms by the four officers.

It stated that Tumay (the deceased) was never part of the violent demonstration, and that he was roasting his corn around a nearby table along with Madam Siah Tamba when he was hit by a bullet as a result of the live bullets that were discharged by the named officers.

Meanwhile, the defendants have been incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison awaiting court trial.
