PAICV accuses Government of “forcing underemployment” by creating internships

Praia, Jan 17 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verdean African Independence Party National Council member (PAICV, opposition party) António Fernandes said the Government may be “forcing underemployment” in Cabo Verde by creating of professional internships.

At a press conference on Wednesday in Praia, to comment on the matter of unemployment in Cabo Verde, António Fernandes considered that part of the 5.000 internships created could be used directly for employment.

Therefore, he pointed out that the unemployment rate would probably be 12.6 percent (%), if the five thousand internships promoted by the Government were not taken into account, as a measure to combat unemployment. “The massification of vocational training actions in disarticulation with the needs of the labour market may have interfered with the unemployment rate,” he explained.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), presented in December 2019, the unemployment rate in Cabo Verde decreased from 12.2% in 2018 to 10.7% in the first half of 2019, representing 1.4 percentage points from last year, while underemployment increased by 7.0 percentage points (pp). On this inquiry, the leader of the largest opposition party said that by making data available for the first half, INE “did not take due account” the territorial coverage, as “it does not cover all municipalities”.
