Police officer dies on his way to official duty

Sunyani, Aug. 15, GNA – A police officer met his untimely death in the early hours of Monday, whilst he was on his way to a duty post at the regional branch of the Bank of Ghana in the Central Business District of Sunyani.

A civilian motorbike rider had picked the officer from Kotokrom, a suburb in Sunyani, on the Sunyani-Techiman road, but on reaching New-Dormaa, another suburb on same road which is closer to the Sunyani township, a Toyota Land cruiser with registration number GW 5705 Y knocked the rider with his police pillion and ran over them, completely damaging the motorbike and killed the officer instantly.

The Body of Lance Corporal John Akutinge of the Rapid Deployment Force Unit had since been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra, whilst Mr George Ayiribi who was riding the motorbike with registration number M-15-DA 119 is in a critical condition, on admission at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani.

Superintendent Stella Sedame, the Acting Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), confirmed the story to the Ghana News (GNA) and said the incident happened around 0615 hours.

The MTTD Commander added that the driver of the vehicle, Mr Oti Yeboah, the Managing Director of Oti Yeboah Complex Limited, a timber firm at Abesim near Sunyani had been granted bail, whilst Police continued with investigations.
