Accra, July 18, GNA – Indiscriminate dumping of waste, open defecation and silting of gutters are on the ascendancy in the Gushegu Township in the Northern Region creating nuisance in the area.
The situation has led to the creation of breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the incidence of diarrhea and cholera; the spread of malaria and other sanitation related diseases in the municipality.
This came to light at a town hall meeting at Gushegu organised by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Christ the King Parish of Gushegu in collaboration with the Catholic Archdiocese of Tamale and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference with support from Conrad Adenauer Stiftung.
The meeting brought together residents and officials of the Gushegu Municipal Assembly to interact and share development issues affecting them and how they could be addressed.
It was held under the theme: « Community Participation in Local Governance for Rapid and Sustainable Development ».
Mr Fuseini Karimu, Deputy Coordinating Director of Gushegu Municipal Assembly, who addressed the participants during the meeting, called on all stakeholders to support the Assembly to enforce its by-laws on sanitation to punish sanitation offenders.
Mr Karimu was not happy that influential people in the area always pleaded for the release of sanitation offenders saying such a practice was not good for the fight against poor sanitation in the area.
Mr Daniel Konlan, Gushegu Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, called for construction of toilet facilities in every household, strong political will, timely dislodgement of wastes, public education and sensitization on laws and behavioural and attitudinal change to tackle poor sanitation in the area.
Mr Iddrisu Alidu, Municipal Director of Environmental Health Unit, said the Assembly in collaboration with development partners has undertaken various efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene practices in the area.
Stakeholders of the Assembly including traditional leaders, assembly members amongst others pledged to do more to improve sanitation practices in the area.
Father Sunil Rodriges, Parish Priest of the Christ the King Parish of Gushegu, advised all to see the fight against poor sanitation as a collective responsibility appealing to all to do their best to ensure a filth-free society.
