Porto Novo, Mar 26 (Inforpress) – Market difficulties are causing concern to potato producers in the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, despite the drop in production this year, which in some cases exceeds 50 per percent (%).
Agricultural producers confirmed the drop in the production of potatoes, which was mainly due to problems in the water supply for irrigation in the different valleys, especially in Martiene and Chã de Norte, two of the main producers of this tuber in this municipality.
In Martiene, Januário Cruz, spokesman for the producers and considered one of the largest producers of potatoes in Cabo Verde, confirmed “a drastic reduction” in production, a situation justified by the interruption of water supply at the start of sowing in December.
In Ribeira dos Bodes, another important producer of potatoes, the farmers representative, Jailson Monteiro, informed that “production has fallen a lot this year”, believing that the fall may have exceeded 60%.
