Praia, Feb 11 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, defended the need to make savings and cuts in superfluous expenditure to channel resources to social programs and help families in difficulty.
The Head of State, who spoke to reporters following his visit on Wednesday to the Armed Forces (FA) institutions, admitted that there was some malnutrition situation in the country, stressing, however, that there is no famine in Cabo Verde.
“I think there is no widespread famine here in the country. In Cabo Verde there is malnutrition. This pandemic has led to increased poverty, deepening inequalities and there are difficult situations for families who cannot eat three meals a day,” said the President of the Republic, quoted by Radio of Cabo Verde.
“We must all be aware of these difficulties. It is for precisely this reason that we must save there where it is needed, reduce superfluous expenditure and channel these resources into social programs that can in this transition period support families, communities where there are more difficulties”, he said, when he was urged to comment on the news that points to the existence of famine in the archipelago.
