MONROVIA, June 3 (LINA) – The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), President George Manneh Weah, has commissioned Colonel Geraldine George as the first female Brigadier General of the AFL.

At its 25th day sitting, the Liberian Senate unanimously confirmed Col. George as the AFL Deputy Chief of Staff reportedly due to her ‘convincing’ academic and military credentials.

Administering the oath of office on June 1 at his office in Monrovia, Pres. Weah congratulated the honoree for exhibiting excellence, indicating, « This honor is for the Liberian people, please do due diligence to your country. »

« Whenever you encounter difficult issues, consult others instead of going to the media, » the President cautioned.

In response, Brigadier General George thanked the President for promoting her and pledged her full support in achieving the government’s Pro-Poor Agenda for the men and women of the military.

« My pinning and commissioning to the rank of Brigadier General and as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the AFL by the Commander-in-Chief in the presence of these dignitaries today shows the respect and confidence you all have in the AFL and in my capacity to play my part in assisting the AFL Chief of Staff and by extension, the Commander-in-Chief, in carrying out his plans to develop our country and position the AFL as a force for good, » she stated.

According to George, she is aware that her promotion comes with added challenges and responsibilities, but that as a trained officer and a mother she will do her best first from her military background and secondly with her motherly instinct.

General George, among several posts, served as acting Commander of the 23rd Infantry Brigade headquartered at the Edward B. Kesselly Barracks prior to assuming her new role in the military.

She comes to her new portfolio with enviable academic credentials, including a Master of Arts (MA) Degree in International Relations from Webster University in the United States of America and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Criminal Justice from the African Methodist Episcopal Zion University College in Monrovia, accompanied by several military training certificates.
