Sokope (V/R), April 17, GNA – A severe rainstorm on Sunday hit Sokope, a village near Torgorme in the North Tongu District, destroying and ripping off roofs of 36 houses.
A total of 200 people, made up of 36 men, 78 women and 86 children have been displaced.
Mr. Felix Dzekle, Torgorme-Alabo National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Zonal Co-ordinator told the GNA the rains hit the area about 1600 hours Sunday, bringing massive destruction in its trail.
He said the displaced were now residing in classrooms in the town, while others were with relatives and friends, adding, no one was injured in the storm.
Mr. Mark Anthony Todzo, North Tongu District NADMO Director, described the situation as worrying.
According to him, his outfit currently has no relief items in stock for the victims.
Mr. Todzo said he was in touch with Volta Regional NADMO office for support, and expressed the hope that some relief items would soon be delivered to the victims.
This, he said was the first time the rainstorm disaster had hit the Sokope community in several decades.
Mr. Todzo advised the people to plant more trees in the community to serve as windbreaks and they should avoid dwelling in old and weak buildings.
