Voter registration exercise peaceful and successful-EC

Hohoe (V/R), Aug. 08, GNA – The Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region at the end of the just ended Voter Registration exercise captured a total of 59,123 eligible voters.
Mr. Enoch Danso Agyekum, Hohoe Municipal Electoral Officer speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the new registration saw an increase of 881 registrants of the 2019 Electoral Register of the Municipality which had 58,242 voters.
Mr. Agyekum said the registration, which was held in 109 registration centres aside the Commission’s office and some Senior High School (SHS) centres was “peaceful and largely successful.”
“Apart from a few pockets of violence at the beginning, there have been no incident of a shortage of registration materials.”
He commended the political parties for their “fantastic support” adding that, the security agencies, religious and traditional leaders in the Municipality were “extremely helpful” in ensuing the peace throughout the exercise.
“The registration officials exhibited a dedicated, committed and hardworking attitude towards duty and for me, this has been one of the most successful exercises by the Commission,” he added
Mr. Agyekum said out of 223 challenged cases, 10 registrants were disqualified, over 100 were cleared while the rest were pending for final determination by the Municipal Review Committee.
“A person was challenged on the grounds of unsound mind, 29 were challenged on basis of non-citizenship, eight were below 18 years and 185 on grounds of non-residence.
One of the people who were challenged based on non-citizenship is a Togolese who had been arraigned before court.”
The Officer said a total of 246 Persons with Disability and 404 trauma registrants were registered in the Municipality.
He said 43, 347 registrants captured, registered using the Ghana Card, 540 used the passport and 15,236 through guarantors.
Mr. Agyekum said 984 voter identification cards were issued to SHS students in the Municipality while 618 people were registered at the office of the Commission.
