Funsi (UWR), Oct 18, 2018 GNA – The Wa East District Assembly in the Upper West Region has voted Mr Nurudeen Suglo, the Assembly Member for Bulenga Electoral area, as the Presiding Member (PM).

He obtained confirmation « Yes » votes of 68 per cent as against 18 per cent « No » after his main contender Mr Issah J. Mohammed, the incumbent PM, pulled out of the race in the last minutes.

The move paved way for the Assembly to have a PM after the two contenders polled 16 votes each for two consecutive times in the last poll, which fell below the required percentage for anyone to be declared a winner.

The election was conducted during the Assembly’s second General Meeting and supervised by the Wa East District Electoral Commission (EC) in an atmosphere described by observers as free, fair and transparent.

Mr Suglo thanked the Assembly Members for reposing confidence in him and called on the immediate past PM to support him to succeed.

He pledged to lobby for motorbikes to assist movements of Assembly Members in the discharge of their duties to bring development to their people at the local level.

The Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Mr Amidu Chinnia Ishaq, said the District Assembly went through a lot of trauma in its efforts to choose a PM and thanked the Assembly Members for finally arriving at a conscientious agreement.

He urged them to bury their differences and work together as one people for the common development of the area, saying funds had been provided for the training of Small Scale Miners in the district with the centre being located at University for Mines and Technology, Tarkwa.

Small scale miners were advised to register with the assembly.
