ZWEDRU, Sept. 18 (LINA) – Over 15 Women from several communities in Zwedru have benefited from BRAC Liberia Microfinance Loan Scene.
The event took place September 14 during the opening of the 35th brand in the Bolleyville Community in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.
The Loan is a refundable one which is aimed at supporting women in business and making them to be self-reliant.
Giving the overview at the opening program, the Chief Executive Officer, Khaled Morshed, disclosed that BRAC started as far back as 1972 in Bangladesh as a relief and development organization, shortly after the war between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The institution later expanded to include Microfinance activities, something that is aimed at bringing relief and reduce poverty for people, predominantly women in several countries globally.
According to Khaled, BRAC has expanded to over 11 countries globally while the Microfinance activities are currently in 6 countries, including Liberia.
Khaled pointed out that the Microfinance activities are currently in 10 counties in Liberia, including Grand Gedeh County.
He further noted that the essence of today’s program is to officially open the 24th branch in Zwedru and called on all initial clients to take advantage of the loans, something he eventually hoped will lead to expansion of the project across the county.
Making remarks at the occasion on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia, Hans Anderson, has lauded BRAC for the Initiative to support women in the county; something he said is in line with government’s Pro-poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development policy.
He pledged the Central Bank’s total support and collaboration to the works of BRAC Liberia in ensuring the successful implementation of the Microfinance activities in the county.
Anderson further called on all clients to meaningfully and purposefully use the money received for the businesses intended.
« To get a loan is good; to pay back is better », Anderson said.
According to him, it is by paying back the loan that will enhance continuity and expansion across the county.
For his part, Grand Gedeh County Inspector, Paul T Neeo, praised BRAC Liberia Microfinance Company for extending to this part of Liberia.
He cautioned the clients to ensure that the intended purpose of the loan is achieved.
According to Neeor, the proper use of the money will further reduce or alleviate difficulties and poverty in the lives of beneficiaries.
He further called on the Management of BRAC Liberia Microfinance Company to consider expansion to other districts and communities outside Zwedru.
« Zwedru is not Grand Gedeh County, » Neeor added.
He further pledged the support of the county’s local authorities to the works of BRAC.
Speaking on behalf of the clients, Julie K. Boduo, commended BRAC Liberia Microfinance Company for coming to their aid.
Madam Boduo called on her colleagues to make maximum use of the money received and ensure repayment accordingly.
At the end of the occasion, about 15 Women from several communities in Zwedru received the minimum cash of L$20,000 as loan.
