Monrovia, April 11 2017 (LINA) – Foreign Minister Marjon V. Kamara has pointed out that the issue of women and girls empowerment is essential for the growth and development of Liberia.

Minister Kamara thanked the World Bank and other partners for their invaluable technical and financial support intended to provide income support and training for 2,000 adolescent girls whose livelihoods were destroyed by the Ebola virus outbreak in 2014.

The Foreign Minister made the statement Tuesday at the launch of the Girls Ebola Recovery Livelihood Support (GERLS) Project held at the Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministry in Monrovia.

She noted that beyond the loss of human lives and immense suffering, the Ebola virus devastated the Liberian economy and adversely affected educational and social activities of every segment of the society.

According to Foreign Minister Kamara, even before the Ebola crisis, the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) conducted in Liberia in 2013 showed the precarious situation of Liberian children.

Minister Kamara explained that the DHS indicated that 50 percent of Liberian children less than 18 years were not living with both parents, noting that majority of them were found living with single mothers.
