Luanda, 21 June (ANGOP) – Basketball player Bruno Fernando became the first Angolan to join an NBA team after being in the position 34 of the Draft held Friday, in New York.

After the first 30 candidates had been chosen, the Angolan power forward was called in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks; however those selected in this phase have not contract guaranteed.

Bruno Fernando, who is to turn 21 years old in August, played for Maryland University ( US) this season having been nominated one of the five players contesting for Kareen Abdul Jabbar award 2019.

The 2, 08 metres tall player, who started his career at Angola’s 1º de Agosto team, has been considered physically ready to meet the demands of the NBA competition.

Bruno Fernandes could become the first Angolan to play in the NBA following failed attempts by Gerson Monteiro (San Antonio Spurs), Victor Muzadi (Dallas Mavericks), Olímpio Cipriano (Detroit Pistons), Yanick Moreira (LA Clippers) and Carlos Morais (Toronto Raptors).
